Brighton City Airport

Tate Surveying Service's Sussex Day quiz

The control tower at Brighton City Airport (formally Shoreham Airport) is part of the airport terminal building designed by the architect R. Stavers Hessell and opened in 1936. It’s a steel-framed building with cement render, in a distinctly art deco style, which often features in period TV shows such as Poirot.

Arundel Castle

Tate Surveying Service's Sussex Day quiz

This striking motte and bailey castle dates back to the 12th century when it replaced the original timber keep. It has been repaired and added to over the centuries, most notably after the Civil War, but still retains many of its original Norman features.

Batemans, Burwash

Tate Surveying Service's Sussex Day quiz

Built c.1634, Bateman’s is famous for being the home of Rudyard Kipling from 1902 until his death in 1936. It’s built of coursed ashlar, a masonry technique using uniformly shaped stone blocks to create perfect horizontal lines around the building. It’s now owned by the National Trust.

De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea

Tate Surveying Service's Sussex Day quiz

Designed by architects Erich Mendelssohn and Serge Chermayeff, along with engineer Felix Samuely, the pavilion opened in 1936. It was the first public welded-steel building in Britain and is designed in an art deco style.

Bodiam Castle

Tate Surveying Service's Sussex Day quiz

Built in the 14th century, Bodiam Castle is a beautiful moated castle, built from sandstone quarried at Wadhurst. It was bequeathed to the National Trust by Lord Curzon in 1925.

Chichester Cathedral

A view of the Baptistry ceiling of the south-west tower at Chichester Cathedral or, to give it its full title, the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity and Cloisters. The first cathedral in Sussex and the oldest building in our quiz, its construction started in 1075 and it was consecrated by Bishop Ralph Luffa in 1108.

Hove Town Hall

The most modern building in our quiz, the Hove Town Hall was designed in the 1970s by architect John Wells-Thorpe in the Brutalist architecture style.

Uppark House

Tate Surveying Service's Sussex Day quiz

Our final Sussex building is Uppark House, a 17th century house built for Ford Grey, 1st Earl of Tankerville. It’s designed in an Anglo-Dutch royal court style and has had a colourful past, with famous residents including Lady Emma Hamilton and H.G.Wells.
