Small Home Improvements that Make a Big Difference

For anyone wanting to sell their home in the new year, being able to fully renovate it to make it as desirable as possible would be ideal. Many of us don’t have the money for that though, especially at this time of year, but there are small changes you can make that can have a big impact on your home’s appeal. Here are some small improvements you can make to help sell your home in the new year without breaking the bank.

First Impressions

Something that can really put off a potential buyer as soon as they arrive outside your house is a shabby front door. Sometimes a simple new paint job and some new door furniture is all it takes to make a great first impression. If you can stretch to a brand new door, that would be a bonus but sometimes just making the old one look better can make a real difference.

Fire up those Features

Period features are always a good selling point especially here in Brighton. The problem is they either get neglected over the years or even replaced. Therefore, restoring them to their former glory can be a real boon for your property. Fireplaces are always a nice feature that suffered terribly in the 60s and 70s. Thankfully, reclaimed period ones or replica ones aren’t always expensive so it can be worth replacing dated but not period fireplaces. Cornicing is another desirable feature that often loses its impact after years and years of being covered in layer upon layer of paint. Stripping all this back to the wood and redoing it properly will vastly improve its appearance.

Restore Floors

There are lots of ways you can improve the look of floors without replacing them. If you don’t have the budget or time to sand down wooden floors, you can paint them and the painted floor look is actually quite fashionable at the moment. Deep cleaning and regrouting can make a big difference to tiles too.

New/Not New Kitchen

A brand new kitchen would be a great selling point but it’s an expense few can afford. Smaller changes like replacing worktops and splash-backs can make a real difference though and some homeowners have even managed to paint their kitchen unit doors to great effect. Be sure to get the right primer and paint though.

The Power of Fabrics

Colourful, stylish and fresh fabrics can transform a home. If you have good quality sofas and chairs, it is well worth getting them reupholstered to replace any tatty, stained or faded material. It sounds naughty but some nice curtains can hide a multitude of sins if your windows aren’t in the best condition. Similarly, some good rugs can distract from flooring that isn’t the best and add warmth and colour to a room.

Small changes like these can add up to make a huge difference if you’re trying to sell your house. That weird time between Christmas and New Year would be a good time to get stuff like this done in preparation for selling your house in 2022.
